British Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared he had no intention of resigning despite heavy defeats for his Labour Party in recent elections across the UK.
Starmer acknowledged the election results last week were "tough" and said they "hurt" and "should hurt." He took responsibility for the outcomes but emphasized it was also his duty to explain how the government would improve. Starmer described the country as facing "dangerous times and dangerous opponents" and warned of a "very dark path" if the situation was not handled properly. He said he took responsibility for continuing in office and avoiding chaos, contrasting this with the Conservative party's past governance.
Starmer also said he was aware of doubters within his party who needed to be proven wrong, and he intended to do so.
The Labour Party suffered heavy losses in English municipal elections and in the national parliaments of Scotland and Wales, traditionally Labour strongholds. Labour lost more than 1,400 council seats across England, losing ground to both Reform UK on the populist right and the Greens on the populist left.
In Wales, Labour’s share dropped from 36.2% of the vote and 30 seats to 11.1% and nine seats in the Senedd, falling from the largest party to a distant third behind Plaid Cymru and Reform UK. In Scotland, Labour faced strong challenges as the Scottish National Party maintained dominance of the Holyrood chamber. Reform UK won as many Scottish seats as Labour, with the Greens, Conservatives, and Liberal Democrats close behind.
Labour has faced pressure due to multiple policy U-turns, communication issues, and the prolonged controversy over Peter Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador, following its general election win earlier in 2024.
Over the weekend, junior MP and former minor minister Catherine West urged colleagues to mount a leadership challenge to Starmer by Monday, threatening to challenge him herself if none emerged. Former Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner, while not breaking with Starmer, issued a list of party priorities on Sunday evening, stating “things must change — now.”
Starmer focused criticism on Labour’s English and UK-wide rivals, particularly the Conservatives, Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, and Zac Polanski’s Greens, rather than nationalist parties in Scotland and Wales. He described battling Reform and the Greens as fighting the despair they exploit, and said neither Farage nor Polanski offered the serious and progressive leadership needed at this time.
He also referenced his working-class background, noting his late brother’s struggles with insecure employment and his sister’s demanding care work without sick pay during the pandemic. Starmer said he wanted to be a prime minister for those for whom the status quo did not work, emphasizing “strength through fairness” as a guiding value. He said these values would be reflected in the upcoming King’s speech outlining the government’s legislative agenda.
Starmer mentioned the economic impact of the war in Iran, sympathizing with voters questioning why they should bear costs for a distant conflict unrelated to Britain. He reviewed ongoing crises over two decades, including the 2008 financial crash, Conservative austerity, Brexit, COVID, and the Ukraine war. He said past responses attempted to revert to a failing status quo, but this time the response must be a “complete break.”
He outlined three areas of change—plans to investigate nationalizing British Steel, efforts to move closer to Europe after Brexit without rejoining the Single Market or Customs Union, and initiatives to offer more employment and training opportunities for young people—though these stops short of what he described as a complete break.
